Mutated Odur in Thymesia: how to win

In Thymesia, the Sea of Trees was not a particularly difficult area to overcome, however its boss, Odur, was easily one of the hardest bosses in the entire game. In fact, until the last boss, the game didn’t even come close to it. Odur was a monstrous enemy, and you were most likely glad to see his back.

Well, he’s back and he’s out for revenge. The mutated Odur is very similar to his normal self. Many of his attacks are reminiscent of what he used to be, but overall, the Mutated Odur is a completely different beast that will require new skills and timing from you if you want to emerge victorious.

Overview of the Mutated Odur

Mutated Odur is one of the many optional bosses hidden in Thymesia. It is locked as the last sub-quest in the Sea of Trees and follows immediately after the God of Fools. Unlike the previous one, Mutated Odur is not a joke. This is far from true.

Mutated Odur Attacks

Mutated Odur, like all difficult encounters in Thymesia, has a large number of attacks. His new Mutated form also gives him access to some unique ranged and sweeping attacks, as he now has a strange fleshy cape-like appendage. All of his tentacle-like attacks have awkward range and timing – you’ve been warned.

Luckily, Mutated Odur, unlike his normal counterpart, only has one phase.

Jump attack

The mutated Odur jumps at the player and strikes with its tentacle, dealing massive damage.

  • Tip: This is a standard jump attack. You’ve already seen it on other characters (including Odur) and it’s just as easy to reflect it. Mutated Odur has a long cooldown after using this attack, so you can carry multiple hits.

A sweeping attack

This is the most common attack of the mutated Odur (in our experience). It attacks four times, twice with the sword and twice with the tentacle. He then lingers before delivering his fifth and final attack. This last attack alternates between a critical and a non-critical attack. However, both attacks are powerful overheal strikes.

  • Tip: The timing of this attack is inconvenient, as the tentacle has a non-standard attack animation, making it difficult to know when to dodge. The real hit is the finisher. Against a critical attack, you can use a feather or step jump, and for an overhead you will have to dodge in time, as the AOE splash damage will most likely hook you if you try to dodge.

Tentacle + kick

The mutated Odur attacks with a tentacle, then his sword hilt glows yellow, after which he strikes with a powerful blow.

  • Tip: This attack can deal massive damage, and both parts of this attack can lie in wait for you. Launching a tentacle attack is always inconvenient due to difficult timing, and a knife strike can also become a nuisance as it works with a delay, but almost instantly. This attack is not easy to dodge, as it has amazing tracking and a huge range. You need to learn how to deviate in time.

AoE explosion

The mutated Odur glows yellow and then unleashes a devastating explosion.

  • Tip: Run away. It’s not an ultimate attack, but it’s not worth the risk of taking around 150 damage. You see the mutated Odur glow and run away.

Sweep the tentacles

The mutated Odur swings its tentacle twice, with a delay between each swing.

  • Tip: This attack is just as awkward as any other tentacle attack, but thanks to the long delay and slow animation, it’s pretty easy to hit the deflection window.

Knife + dash back

The mutated Odur stabs, then quickly steps back. This attack will result in several ranged attacks.

  • Tip: This attack is inconvenient as it increases the distance between you and the mutated Odur. He will almost always accompany this attack with one of his ranged attacks to keep you at bay. The counterattack is simply to parry a clear telegraph strike and then wait to see what he does next.

Tentacle Swing + Dash Back

The mutated Odur slowly swings the tentacle in front of him and then steps back.

  • Tip: This attack, like the previous one on this list, is used to create distance between you and the boss. After that, he will attack with long-range strikes, so be careful. This attack doesn’t deal much damage, but the swing is so slow that its timing is incredibly inconvenient. Dodging backwards may be the best option.

Combo of 4 Tentacle Knife Hits

A mutated Odur will use this strike from a distance, but he doesn’t mind using it point-blank either (it just happens a lot less often). Mutated Odur deals 4 hits with deceptive range, short delay, and high damage.

  • Tip: You won’t be able to avoid this hit. The range is huge. The timing of the strike is very similar to the normal 3 hit combo of the opponent with the spear that you have already encountered. Just remember that this is a 4 hit combo!

Critical Attack – Ranged Attack

The mutated Odur will glow green, jump into the air, and then unleash a powerful ranged attack that deals massive damage.

  • Tip: A mutated Odur will only do this from a distance. The best way to counter it is to drop the pen immediately when it turns green. This will knock him to the floor and stun him. Use this opportunity to run up to him and continue the fight.

Final attack

The mutated Odur will only use this attack when he is below half health. Before grabbing a player and dealing massive damage to them, they will flash red for a short time.

  • Tip: This attack is very brutal. It is applied very quickly, and you have almost no time to react. The best defense is to try to run away or dodge him so that he does not have time to grab. The timing for both counterattacks is incredibly awkward and you could still get caught. Make sure you have plenty of health.

Featured Talents

Accurate reflection

Mutated Odur, like any other boss, is very susceptible to parry. Therefore, the talent “Accurate Reflection” is simply necessary. It’s too good to pass up and will greatly reduce the fight time.

long claw

In addition to that, you need a Long Claw. This is a great claw upgrade that allows you to quickly land 2 hits for massive damage. Once Mutated Odur runs out of white health, switch to Longclaw and end the fight that way.

Long dodge

Finally, Long Dodge is our favorite dodge upgrade. It can be used to increase the distance between you and your target, or to shorten that distance. This is great, just keep in mind that the cooldown after the second dodge is increased.

How to defeat the Mutated Odur

Mutated Odur is a difficult fight, but the strategy for defeating him is basically the same as any other boss. You need to deflect as many punches as possible, which means you just need to learn his timing. His tentacle attacks are a real foe as their animation makes it hard to find the right window, however Mutated Odur is surprisingly forgiving.

Mutated Odur doesn’t have many attacks that he can combine with other attacks. This fight is very much like a back-and-forth, which means you can easily recover between combos and not get punished. The only exception is when he steps back, as 100% of the time he will throw several ranged attacks and finish them off with a critical attack.

Since Mutated Odur will retreat from time to time and you don’t want him to heal, don’t forget to throw feathers. Feathers are incredibly useful for extending the time it takes to heal, so do this at intervals and keep his health low.

When the Mutated Odur is destroyed, you will end up with the Sea of Trees.
