In Elden Ring, Esgar, Priest of Blood is a common boss that you can encounter in the Leindell Catacombs after activating the switch in the depths. Defeating the boss can be difficult despite the low health pool, mainly due to the two dogs that accompany him.
While the boss himself increases blood consumption with each attack, dogs can do this too, so bleeding in combat is a common occurrence. But even if it’s a 3v3 fight, it can be made easier with proper planning and coordinated dodge timing. Here’s everything you need to know about Blood Priest Esgar.

Esgar’s Blood Priest Attacks
Esgar the Blood Priest’s attacks are fairly easy to dodge and don’t pose much of a threat. However, the combination of his attacks with bleeding and dogs that can also bleed makes him avoid them.

- Tip: By rolling away from the boss or in any direction, you can easily avoid the attack.
The boss jumps high into the air and delivers a dagger attack.

The boss releases a swarm of flies that fly towards the player, dealing damage and increasing blood consumption if they are in the AoE area. The attack has good tracking, but is slow.

How to defeat Blood Priest Esgar
Close combat strategy
For the melee strategy, you need to separate the dogs from Esgar and focus on killing them first. Attacking them at the same time is risky and can lead to death from blood loss. When the dogs are finished, you can fight Esgar alone. Using heavy weapons can prove quite useful in this fight, as you can focus on all three with a single swipe of your sword. The boss is usually stunned by heavy attacks, causing most of his attacks to be cancelled. A jumping heavy attack can deal serious damage to the boss and cause his composure to break relatively quickly.
The presence of boluses in the boss or dogs can alleviate impending blood loss. For this fight, it is very important to have resistance to blood loss. As a talisman, you can equip the Stronghorn Amulet, and as an armor set, you can equip the Hoslow Set, both of these items increase durability. The armor set can be obtained by killing Juno Hoslow as part of the final contract in the Vulcan Manor questline.
For a ranged strategy, you need to keep your distance and use all the AOE spells you have. Use the Spirits to attract the boss and dogs and draw them aside while you cast your spells. The boss can be afflicted with Red Rot, so having Exix’s Rot can be a great option. One or two well-placed breaths can cause Red Rot, causing the boss’s health bar to gradually decrease.
Animal Scare Torch is a great item that can solve the dog situation in this fight. He will force the dogs to retreat from you while you deal with Esgar. You can take it in your left hand, and cast spells with your right, and then not a single dog will approach you. The torch does not require high stats to use, so it can be used by all classes.
- Reach level 70 or higher
- Focus on dogs first
- Stagger the boss with heavy attacks
- Use AOE spells to take out the dogs and the boss at the same time
